ABOUT THE SITE

THE PHOTOS:

The photographs presented here are the result of six years of concentrated horse racing photography. Concentrated in the sense that I went to the races with my camera at least once, and often two or three times a week.

I went mostly to tracks in my home state of Victoria in Australia - to Melbourne city tracks at Flemington, Caulfield and Moonee Valley, as well as to country tracks at Cranbourne, Moe, Mornington, Pakenham, Stony Creek, Woolamai and Yea. I have also photographed racing at Sha Tin and Happy Valley in Hong Kong, at Santa Anita in California at Ayr and Perth in Scotland and at Kranji in Singapore.

Except for Singapore, all the photos were taken from public access areas of the tracks.

THE SITE:

I've set this site up purely to present my photos for the enjoyment of racing fans, punters and the general public. Please feel free to comment on the photos, or the site. I welcome all comments, suggestions and criticisms.

SEARCH:

If you click on PORTFOLIO, a search box appears. You can search by horse, jockey, track or any other key word or phrase.

EQUIPMENT:

For the technically minded here are some details on the equipment I used to take the photos.

Early photos were taken with a Canon 20D fitted with a Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS lens or a Canon 70-200f4L USM.

In mid 2006 I switched to the Canon 1D MKIIN fitted with a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L or a Canon 400mm f5.6 L. In 2009, I added the Canon 300mm f4L IS lens. Most of my photos now are taken with the MKIIN and either the 70-200mm f2.8 L or 300mm f4 L IS.

Almost all the images were shot in RAW and converted to jpg in Canon Digital Photo Professional, or in Capture One software. None of the photos have been manipulated in Photoshop except for occasional use of the stamping tool to remove dust spots or small distracting objects.
